P52 Week 15 – Black and White vs. Color – Poulsbo Lifestyle Photographer

Week 15 of my 52 week project came from “The Visual Toolbox” and was all about exploring Black and White conversions.  Going from color to black and white can drastically change the mood of an image.  I should also point out that making a good black and white image is rarely a simple conversion.  There is almost always some extra tinkering with tone curves and levels as well as some dodging and burning that is required in converting a color image into a black and white image.

This was a pretty fun assignment for me.  The sun is showing it’s face a little more often out here in Washington meaning there are lots of dramatic shadows to play with and it has totally rekindled my love for black and white.

Here are two images (taken a couple seconds apart) of my husband making coffee in our kitchen, one color and one black and white.  We are HUGE coffee drinkers and pour over converts  (we haven’t owned a drip coffee maker for years now).  So making coffee in our house is one part ritual, one part art, and all parts delicious.
