P52 Week 19 – Leading Lines

This past weekend I spent some time looking for leading lines as part of my 52 week project.  By definition leading lines are lines in an image that help guide your eye to a particular part of an image.

I’ll be honest.  Leading lines are one of those things that I just don’t think about too much anymore.  As someone that shoots with a very journalistic approach I don’t consciously “place” my subjects in a spot to fully utilize leading lines. And as a basic element of composition, the concept of leading lines is so well ingrained that thinking about them before pressing the shutter just doesn’t happen, it’s more of a second nature thing now.  So having an exercise force me to slow down and really consider this one element was pretty fun.

I spent some time keeping an eye out for lines but in the end decided to snap a few images of my son on the staircase.  It’s a very simple scene with lots of strong lines.  What do you think?

No real leading lines in this last image, it just made me smile.  🙂
