Here and Now; Day in the Life November 14 – Poulsbo Storytelling Photographer

Over the end of September I was able to take part Molly Flanagan’s course “Visual Storytelling” through the Define School.  It was fantastic.  Our final project was to shoot, curate and present an entire visual story.  I opted to shoot a day in the life for myself. (If you are curious, you can see that final project here.)  It was something I had been meaning to try for a while but just hadn’t gotten around to yet.

Staying at home with a two year old can mean that your days blur together quickly.  Seriously, ask me what I did last Monday.  I have no idea.  Days are all variations on a theme.  Everyday a little different.  Everyday a little the same.  But out of that monotony important things happen.  Beautiful things happen.  With that in mind, I decided I would start shooting a full day in my life once month.

I decided to shoot my first day last Friday, November 14.  I thought, “It’s a Friday, right?  My husband will get home a little early, we will go do something fun and interesting.  It will be great!”

Yeah, not so much.

I was up until 2:30 AM riding out a streak of productivity the night before, leaving me not quite myself on Friday.  My son also woke up on the wrong side of the bed.  By the time noon rolled around and I had a handful of shots but no clear direction on our day (other than it was spinning out of control) I was tempted to simply put the camera down and shoot a different day.  After all, it was just going on my blog.  No one would ever know there was a failed attempt.

But then I remembered the whole point of the exercise was to record our days as they are.  Right here, right now.  And if I was going to be truthful about it there were bound to be bad days mixed in among the good, right?  So I kept shooting.

I’d like to say that thought was the attitude adjustment I needed to turn my whole day around.  But it wasn’t.  They day was exhausting right through until evening when I decided I didn’t want to go anywhere and I just wanted to order pizza instead.  However, while cullling the following day with the benefit of hindsight I found that there were, in fact, a few lovely moments in the midst of a very blah day.

So here’s Friday November 14, 2014.
