This was a really special session. Let’s just start there. Not only was this my first session back after having our daughter but there’s a little back story that goes with this one.
This was the second time I was able to work with this wonderful family. The first time was back in 2014. Then, mom contacted me about a year later to set up another session. After a couple initial emails she dropped me a line and let me know that they were going to have to postpone family photos due to a medical scare with one of their 3 children. (Everything is fine and that is all water under the bridge now.)
Mom contacted me again right as I was reopening my calendar after our daughter was born and scheduled one last photo session at their house here in Washington. When I swung by their place walk their home and discuss their upcoming session it was a little bit like meeting an entirely new person; a person who still had all the strength and tenacity as the woman I had met a couple years, back but one who suddenly had an uncanny clarity. We spoke a lot about parenting, and she explained that her perspective had changed drastically over the past year. She no longer mourned the loss of her babies has they grew. Instead she is rooting for them to grow up and cannot wait to see who they become. She explained that she spends more time living in the present and embracing the ups and downs of mothering as part of the larger picture. And as we discussed their session she admitted to me that she had no idea what her kids were going to wear, she really just wanted to capture her children as they are right now. It was so beautiful.
I may have left that meeting a little weepy cause a) I had a 5 month old infant at home and my hormones were all over the map and b) YOU GUYS! It was like listening to myself talk about parenting and documenting my own family.
