The first part of December was a little scattered for me. I love Christmas and the holiday season and generally enjoy the hubbub that goes along with it. However, this year I just haven’t been able to get out in front of all my “to do”s. For some reason multiple appointments for the dentist, the vet, and the pediatrician have all piled up this month along side other really fun adult things like needing to replace carpet and find a new tenant for our condo shortly after the new year. Add one toddler who has decided has decided it is about darn time that his nap time move from 11 am to 2pm, but did not have the decency to send his mother a memo regarding said change; and you have one frazzled lady who had accomplished no Christmas shopping and barely managed to get Christmas cards out.
That lady was me.
I was a hot wreck.
There was moping, and I rarely mope.
But then late last week something awesome happened. My son made peace with his new nap time and slept in his crib. Since I was trying to settle kiddo down almost all the lights in the house were off. Outside, it was heavily overcast and approaching sunset in a classic 3:30PM in western washington sort of way. (That’s right, 3:30 is approaching sunset in Washington, I wouldn’t joke about this). And it was quiet. It felt like my entire house let out one giant exhale.
So I did the only thing I could do. I exhaled with my house. Then I grabbed my camera in the hopes that I could somehow capture that perfect late afternoon stillness.
Turns out, a little quiet was all I really needed.
