P52 Week 6 – Motion – Personal Photography

This week……well, I’ll be honest.  This week I forced a forced a square peg into a round hole, so to speak.

I had been having so much fun playing with slow shutter speed and with camera movement while working through “The Visual Toolbox” that I wanted to keep working on it this week, which was scheduled to be a week off from DuChemin’s book.  So I chose the theme of “Motion” this week so that I could keep working with those techniques.

The two images below show motion in two ways.

The first is a slow shutter self-portrait where subject motion is used with a stationary camera to create a ghostly image.  Self portraits are not this easiest thing to do.  Doing one with a 10 second shutter speed, made it even more difficult.  There was a lot of counting and committing to holding a position even though I very much wanted to micro adjust where my chin was, or how my hands were placed.  So file the ghost selfie under “easier said than done”.  But this one turned out pretty well.

The second image uses a technique called panning.  This process uses the panning motion of the camera to freeze the subject against a moving background.  Turns out, erratically moving toddlers are a terrible subject to use when experimenting with this sort of technique.  So as a panning image, it isn’t that great.  But it makes me smile and gets the point across all the same, so I wanted to include it.

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend.  As always questions and comments are welcome.  I would love to hear from you!
