Beach sessions can be a little different here in Washington state. Sometimes we don’t get sun. Sand isn’t always plentiful. And in lieu of sparse palm trees we have ample evergreens. I love those differences. And I love the way those differences are a way that Washington leaves its marks on images made here.
When I first met this family a few years ago mom explained that the first professional portraits they had taken were on a beach on the east coast. Because she was originally from the midwest having photos taken on the beach was such a unique and novel setting. I also grew up in the midwest and still feel this sentiment quite keenly. I love thinking about how this sweet family now has beach images on each coast. Images that are undoubtedly so very different from each other both in time and space.
We shot this session in the backyard of a dear friend of theirs. We combed the beach for sand dollars and shells. We blew bubbles and watched the waves. We played on the swing set and ran amuck in their yard. Fresh faces, bare feet, the scent of slightly brackish water catching in the breeze, and the sound of the water rhythmically stretching up the shore and back again….
